Substrate and Humidity Control
Humidity is controlled most easily by the correct substrate, usually the type most similar to whatever is underfoot where your tortoise is found in their natural habitat. Sterilised topsoil is generally a good idea and can easily be found at most garden centres. Most drier substrates can cause tortoises to dehydrate. Even dry soil is not completely dry and maintains the correct humidity at ground level for most mediterranean tortoises. Your tortoise will instinctively sleep where the substrate is the correct humidity, if given a choice. Often careful observation of your tortoise is the best way to know what it needs.
Natural Sphagnum Moss
This moss is from a sustainable UK source. Ideal for tortoises that require a relatively high humidity environment such as Redfoot, Yellowfoot tortoises and some turtles. These species are usually found in forests where leaf litter and moss are typical substrates. Most tortoises benefit from a high humidity hide area and sphagnum moss can be an easy way of acheiving this.
