Outdoor Runs

The outdoor runs are secure and accessible with wood frame mesh sides and removable mesh tops. The Outdoor Runs have solid tongue and groove wood cladding around the base to reduce your tortoise's natural instinct to try to escape. These should not be confused with the rabbit runs as are not suitable. This feature also increases the security of the enclosure and can be replaced with Polycarbonate triplewall on request (additional charge).  The tops of the enclosures are removable and secured with hasp and staples. Locks are also provided on request (additional charge).

Outdoor Insulated Hides

These hides are intended for outdoor use as shelter for hardier species such as Hermann's and other Mediterranean tortoises.  This allows them to be outside as soon as they wake from the hibernation in early spring and until late summer.  Please note that the temperature variation of mediterranean tortoises in their wild climate is from 16-26 degrees C.  If the temperature is regularly below this temperature a heatlamp should be provided outside in an appropriate shelter like our All-Season boxes below.

Outdoor Insulated Hide construction details;  

  • Tongue and groove solid wood cladding outer walls
  • Double skinned walls, roof and base to create an insulating air cavity with a layer of bubble foil insulation.
  • Pent style felted roof sloped from front to back to keep the door side dry
  • Base is raised with wood bearers
  • Elevated door allows room for a depth of soil/sand substrate inside the enclosure essential to prevent dehydration (plastic trays (additional charge) can be provided on request for easier soil replacement and handling.
  • The floor and lower half of the walls are waterproofed with a hard-wearing water-resistant floor paint.

All-Season Houses

All-Seasons Houses are designed to house tortoises all year round. They are fully insulated to protect against the cold, wet and over-heating in the sun.  They are constructed in a similar way to the Outdoor Insulated Hides apart from the sunrooms (optional), more doors and secure ventilation that can be open or shut at any time.  They have enough space to house heatlamp, UV lighting, Optional sunrooms are suitable for semi-arid species. The sunrooms allow maximum exposure to UVB light whilst retaining heat well (polycarbonate sheeting is used) so they are suitable for keeping tortoises outdoors all year.  This is particularly useful for those species which do not hibernate (for example Indian Stars and Leopard tortoises).  The roof is fitted with high quality felt and the outside is painted with high quality weather proofing paint. The All-Season Houses are fully assembled on delivery which will come on a pallet.
